Turnagain Arm HikingTrail

Before Anchorage was a city, go back in time and hike the old telegraph line corridor and part of the old mail route. This Anchorage hiking trail is a pleasant hike alongside Turnagain Arm. Bring a windbreaker as the winds may blow fiercely, which can make the beginning of your hike chilly until you get warmed-up.

To find this Anchorage hiking trail, drive or bike to Potter Creek (Mile 115.1 Seward Highway), McHugh Creek (Mile 111.9), Rainbow (Mile 108.3) or Windy Corner (Mile 106.7). Anchorage's Turnagain Trail runs 9. 4 miles one way.

 

Five to eight hours is required to hike the hills and plateau dotted with deciduous cottonwoods, birches and gurgling streams. Dall sheep and the occasional bear are often spotted along this sheltered Anchorage hiking trail. Turnagin Arm Trail has a high point of 900 feet and is excellent for novice hikers.

Tony Knowles Coastal Hiking Trail is a paved 11-mile (17.6km) path.

Anchorage's most popular trail begins downtown hugging the coast through Earthquake Park to Kincaid Park. Kincaid contains a vast network of unpaved, wooded trails. Enjoy views of Sleeping Lady and Cook Inlet to the west, and the Chugach Range to the east. Bicycles rentals available from Downtown Bicyle Rentals.

Flattop Mountain Hiking Trail

Anchorage's most-popular day-hike. Elevation: 3,510-feet. Three miles round-trip (4.8 km).  Elevation gain: 1350 ft (396 m). Great views of Alaska Range, Cook Inlet, Turnagain Arm, and Anchorage. Solitary but safe because another hiker is never too far ahead or behind.

Follow signs for Chugach State Park from Upper Huffman Road to Glen Alps Road. Flattop Mountain Shuttle carries hikers from downtown Anchorage daily for only $22.

Kincaid Park Hiking Trails in Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska's Kincaid Park hiking trails cover 43 miles (69 km) of maintained trails on 1,400 acres (566 hectare). Runners World picked this Anchorage park as one of the country's top 50 running trails. Kincaid Park is also a Nordic ski area certified for international 5K, 10K, 15K, and 30K competition. Expect bikers, roller bladers, dogs, moose, fox and many Alaskan birds in this area.

Drive west on Raspberry Road till the end to reach the chalet and hiking trails, or via the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.

Williwaw Valley Hiking Trail

Anchorage's Williwaw hike is a scenic 14-mile round-trip hike. Many emerald blue & green lakes glisten in Mount Williwaw's shadows (5,445 feet elevation).  Dall sheep bounce along the ridgetops. Lots of wildflowers. Be prepared for a change in the weather. Bring bear spray.

Drive to the Glen Alps or Prospect Heights entrances to Chugach State Park.

Williwaw Valley hiking trails gain 1,585 feet while following Middle Fork Campbell Creek. Hikeing time: eight to 12 hours. Since there are plenty of campsites in the Williwaw valley, this hike works well as an overnighter.  

Eagle River Nature Center Hiking Trails

Eagle River nature center is a popular entrance into Chugach State Park. Public use cabins and yurts available.

Eagle River's Echo Bend hike is an easy 3 mile hike (4.8 km). 

Heritage Falls is 4.5 mile (7.2 km) easy hike.

The Twin Falls hike is a moderate hike.  Wear boots because there are several stream crossings.  Beaver ponds and waterfalls.  Eagle River's Twin Falls hike cover 9 miles (14.4 km) and is Alaska hiking at its fiinest.

Follow the Glenn Highway and exit the first Eagle River exit to Eagle River Road.

Thunderbird Falls Hiking Trail

Not a true Anchorage, Alaska hike, head north of Eagle River to find this easy, 1-mile (1.6 km) hike. Thunderbird falls crawls through rolling terrain and birch forest to the viewing platform of the 200-foot-high Thunderbird Falls. Check this out in the winter for the cool ice falls.  Great Anchorage, Alaska winter hike.
